Memorial Day Always Calls Back to Iraq

On this Memorial Day, I want to share with you how I process and think about the loss I saw first hand when I served in Iraq.

When I signed up to serve, I never thought my reality in this war would be confronting the inescapable loss of fellow service members. Even with that knowledge, seeing people I served with and grew to know and love die in front of me was an experience no amount of training could have prepared me for.

These men and women made the ultimate sacrifice for all of us. There are hardly any more selfless acts one can make than dying for one’s country. No matter what I’m doing, I carry the memory of their bravery and honor, which motivates me to be a better mother, wife, and community member.

If you have a close friend or family member who is a veteran and is able to be with you today, please be thankful. I know too many who are missing this day that should be spent relaxing with the ones they love. For all of our servicemen and women who have given their lives for our sake, I hope you will carry their memory with you today as well.
